Neuro-Inclusion...not a fad!

Recently, I’ve found myself in some deeply thought-provoking conversations about neurodiversity. Specifically, I’ve heard it dismissed as just another "fad," a trendy buzzword destined to fade away. As you can imagine, it takes every ounce of restraint not to react emotionally in those moments. But staying composed has allowed me to uncover some important points worth reflecting on.

For those of us navigating a neurotypical world through a neurodivergent lens, the challenges are undeniable. From workplaces to social settings, we’ve had to adapt, mask, and stretch ourselves to fit into systems that weren’t designed with us in mind. But what makes it harder, sometimes frustratingly so, is the influence of social media and mainstream narratives that distort or dilute the realities of neurodivergent experiences.

The Problem With the Spotlight

Social media, for all its potential to amplify voices, can often be a double-edged sword. There are incredible creators on these platforms, authentic individuals sharing their lived experiences, advocating for change, and offering meaningful insights into what it means to live as a neurodivergent person.

Yet, their voices are often drowned out by a different type of content. You’ve probably seen it: influencers spreading misinformation or reducing neurodivergence to click-worthy soundbites. There’s the familiar refrain of “We’re all a little bit [insert neurodivergent label 🏷️ here],” which diminishes genuine experiences and perpetuates harmful stereotypes.

And so, we’re left asking the question:

🤔 Why do these reductive voices go viral, while authentic ones struggle to gain traction?

🤔 Is it because algorithms prioritise spectacle over substance?

🤔 Is it societal bias favouring narratives that fit the "social norm"?

🤔 Or is it simply that the truth doesn’t seem flashy enough to generate clicks?

Whatever the reason, it feels as though the systems we rely on for visibility and awareness are working against the very idea of neuro-inclusion. By packaging neurodiversity as something novel or trendy, social media and mainstream media risk reducing it to a fleeting “moment” rather than recognising it as the movement it truly is.

Neuro-Inclusion Is Not a Trend...It’s a Necessity

Here’s the reality: neuro-inclusion is not a "nice-to-have." It’s not a trendy hashtag or a fleeting moment of cultural curiosity. It’s a necessity.

This isn’t just about making life easier for neurodivergent individuals (though that’s certainly part of it). It’s about creating systems, workplaces, and cultures where everyone can thrive, not just those who conform to the mould.

True neuro-inclusion means rethinking how we design environments, develop policies, and measure success. It’s about recognising that diversity in thought, perspective, and experience strengthens our communities and organisations. And yet, while social media and mainstream platforms might distort or sensationalise the message, it’s our lived experiences and collective truths that will drive real, lasting change.

Turning Frustration Into Fuel

For me, this isn’t just a soapbox, it’s personal. After 36 years of masking, trying to fit in, and shrinking myself to avoid standing out, I’ve made a commitment to never go back. The cost of that life, mentally, emotionally, and even physically, is too high.

I know many of you feel the same way. And I see the incredible work being done by so many who are fighting for neuro-inclusion, often with more eloquence and strength than I could ever hope to muster. These individuals are planting the seeds of change, one conversation, one story, and one act of advocacy at a time.

Every small but meaningful step we take, sharing our experiences, supporting others, challenging misconceptions, brings us closer to a world where neuro-inclusion isn’t dismissed as a fad but embraced as a foundational value.

How Do We Turn This Into a Movement?

So, how do we push neuro-inclusion from being perceived as a fleeting trend to becoming an undeniable movement?

One thing is certain: it starts with us. It starts with amplifying the real, authentic voices that tell the truth about neurodivergent experiences. It starts with education, advocacy, and challenging systems that exclude rather than include. And it starts with recognising the power of our stories, stories that may not always go viral but have the potential to change lives.

Let’s Talk

I want to hear from you. What’s one thing you think could help move neuro-inclusion from a "fad" to a true movement for change?

Drop your thoughts in the comments below. Let’s keep this conversation going and keep building momentum for a world where inclusion isn’t just aspirational, it’s a default.

Because, let’s face it: the world doesn’t just need to include us. It needs us to thrive

A confused neeurodivergent person stands in a room filled with vivid images of people. Neuro-inclusion is not a fad!
