The Problem Child

There is a strange feeling when you spend years watching the world slowly open a door, only to then hear the hinges creak as people start pushing it shut again.

There is a particular kind of stupidity in deciding to put creative work into the world when you already know what people can be like. I say stupidity with affection, because apparently I keep doing it.

The uniform gave me authority. Leaving forced me to find influence. Leadership after the uniform is not about rank, title or role. It is about what remains when those things are stripped away, and whether people still listen when all you have left is your voice, values and experience.

Self-promotion can feel less like confidence and more like breaking a rule when you have spent years masking, conforming and waiting for permission to belong. This article explores how those patterns become ingrained, why neurodivergent people can struggle to celebrate themselves and what it takes to finally raise your hand.

For years, I thought my AuDHD brain was full of random ideas and unfinished directions. In reality, I had not yet found the thread connecting them. This is how leaving policing, changing careers and building work across books, films, speaking and mentoring helped me turn chaos into purpose.
